The Difference Between Sales And Marketing

Working in a 5-star hotel gives you the opportunity to grow, develop your skills and aspire for the next level such as becoming a future hotelier. While hoteliers know all the hotel departmental structures and the hotel hierarchy, those who are new to the industry might not be very familiar with all the hotel’s departments, specific roles, and their job descriptions. Especially when it comes to the Sales and Marketing Department. In our pervious posts we have covered the sales and marketing roles in the hotel industry, today we will talk more about their difference.

The hotel industry is huge and many different jobs are important within the industry. Two of these jobs as mentioned above, are sales and marketing. Though they may sound similar, they are not the same. Understanding the difference between sales and marketing in the hotel industry is important, as both play important roles in making a hotel successful. Before we explain their differences let’s break them first one be one.

Marketing In The Hotel Industry

Marketing is like telling a story about the hotel. Imagine you have a beautiful hotel with comfortable rooms, delicious food, and fun activities. How do you let people know about it? That’s where marketing comes in. Marketing is all about creating awareness and excitement about your hotel. It involves spreading the word about what makes your hotel special and why people should choose to stay there. Marketing in the hotel industry involves many different activities. It includes things like making advertisements, creating a website, posting on social media, and sending out emails. The goal of marketing is to attract guests to the hotel by showcasing what the hotel has to offer. It’s about reaching out to potential guests before they even think about booking a room.

One important part of marketing is understanding who the hotel’s guests are. For example, is the hotel mostly for families on vacation, business travelers, or couples looking for a romantic getaway? By knowing the target audience, the hotel can tailor its marketing messages to appeal directly to those people.

Marketing is also about creating a brand for the hotel. A brand is like the hotel’s personality. It’s what makes the hotel stand out from others. For example, some hotels might be known for being luxurious and fancy, while others might be known for being affordable and comfortable. The brand helps customers know what to expect when they book a stay.

Sales In The Hotel Industry

Sales, on the other hand, is about closing the deal. After marketing has done its job of attracting people to the hotel, sales comes into play. The sales team works directly with potential guests or partners to get them to book a room, hold an event, or use the hotel’s services. Sales is more about the direct interaction with customers and convincing them to make a purchase.

In the hotel industry, sales can involve different tasks. It could be talking to a company to book rooms for their employees, working with a couple to plan their wedding at the hotel, or even negotiating with travel agents to recommend the hotel to their clients. Salespeople need to be good at understanding the needs of the customer and showing them how the hotel can meet those needs.

The difference between sales and marketing in the hotel industry is that while marketing creates interest, sales turns that interest into action. Sales is about making sure that the interest generated by marketing results in actual bookings and revenue for the hotel.

How Marketing and Sales Work Together?

Even though sales and marketing are different, they must work closely together. Marketing and sales are like two sides of the same coin. Marketing creates the opportunity by attracting potential guests, and sales closes the opportunity by securing the booking. For example, imagine the marketing team creates a beautiful brochure and website showcasing the hotel’s new spa services. This gets a lot of people interested in visiting the spa. The sales team then follows up by contacting those interested people and offering them special packages or discounts to encourage them to book a spa day or weekend stay.

Without marketing, the sales team would have a much harder time finding people who might be interested in the hotel. And without sales, all the marketing efforts would not lead to any actual bookings or revenue. This is why understanding the difference between sales and marketing is so important—they are different, but they need each other to be successful.

Key Differences Between Sales and Marketing in the Hotel Industry:

Focus Area:

  • The primary difference between sales and marketing lies in their focus. Marketing is focused on reaching a broad audience to create awareness and interest in the hotel. Sales focuses on individuals or small groups to convert that interest into bookings.

Timeline:

  • Marketing usually happens at the beginning of the customer journey. It’s the first step in getting someone to consider the hotel. Sales comes later, when the customer is closer to making a decision.

Methods Used:

  • Marketing uses tools like advertisements, social media, websites, and email campaigns to reach potential guests. Sales uses direct communication, such as phone calls, meetings, and personal emails, to secure bookings.

Measurement of Success:

  • The success of marketing is often measured by how many people it reaches and how much interest it generates. For example, how many people visited the hotel’s website or clicked on an ad? Sales success is measured by how many bookings were made or how much revenue was generated.

Skills Required:

  • Marketers need to be creative and good at understanding what will attract people to the hotel. They also need to be analytical to measure the success of their campaigns. Salespeople need to be persuasive, good at communication, and able to build relationships with customers.

Customer Interaction:

  • Marketing usually involves one-way communication. The hotel sends out messages to the public without direct interaction. Sales, however, involves direct interaction with customers, answering their questions, and addressing their concerns.

Role in the Customer Journey:

  • Marketing plays a role in the early stages of the customer journey, helping to build awareness and interest. Sales comes into play in the later stages, helping to finalize the decision and secure the booking.

Objective:

  • The main objective of marketing is to attract as many potential guests as possible. The main objective of sales is to convert those potential guests into actual guests who book rooms, events, or services.

The difference between sales and marketing in the hotel industry is like the difference between planting seeds and harvesting crops. Marketing is about planting the seeds by creating awareness and interest in the hotel. Sales is about harvesting the crops by turning that interest into actual bookings. Both are essential for the success of a hotel, and when they work together, they ensure that the hotel not only attracts guests but also fills its rooms and grows its revenue.

Understanding the difference between sales and marketing helps hotel managers and staff focus on the right strategies at the right time. By doing so, they can create a powerful combination that keeps guests coming through the doors and keeps the hotel thriving.
